Overview

Plant biology is the scientific study of plants, encompassing their structure, physiology, growth, development, reproduction, genetics, and ecology, and within agronomy it provides the mechanistic foundation for improving crop production and managing natural resources. The discipline integrates plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology, and ecology to understand how plants capture light and synthesize organic matter, take up water and nutrients, respond to their environment, and defend against pests and pathogens. A central concern is the response of plants to biotic and abiotic stress, including the architecture and phenotyping of root systems that determine drought and salinity tolerance and overall plant performance. Research relevant to this field examines the biology and life cycle of crop pests such as the fall armyworm and the biological control of insect pests, the agronomic performance of crops including sunflower hybrids under varying inputs and irrigation, and the characterization and cultivation of underutilized species. This knowledge supports the goals of optimizing yield, enhancing resilience, and conserving soil and water within changing agricultural systems. Plant biologists seek to elucidate the molecular and physiological mechanisms governing development and adaptation, and to translate them into improved varieties and management practices. Study of the field spans plant growth and development, stress physiology and root function, crop genetics and breeding, and the application of biotechnology to sustainable agriculture.
