Overview
A pesticide is a chemical or biological agent used to prevent, control, or eliminate pests that damage crops, livestock, stored products, or human health, including insects, weeds, fungi, rodents, and other organisms. Pesticides are categorized by their targets, such as insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides, and by their chemical nature, ranging from synthetic compounds to substances derived from natural sources. In Agronomy Research, pesticides are studied to understand their effectiveness, their behavior in soil, water, and plants, and their effects on target and non-target organisms and the wider environment. While they can substantially reduce crop losses and protect food production, pesticides also raise concerns about residues, toxicity, environmental contamination, and the development of resistance, motivating research into safer products, optimal application, and remediation of pollution. Research published in this journal reflects these themes, including bioremediation strategies to reduce pesticide pollution on agricultural land, the management of fruit flies using the environmentally safer pesticide spinosad, the efficacy of plant extracts against fall armyworm, and the biodegradation of pesticides such as malathion using bacterial strains. Together these illustrate work on both pesticide use and the mitigation of their environmental impact. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pesticides and agronomy.
