Overview
Food and nutrients describe the relationship between the foods people eat and the chemical substances those foods supply to sustain life, growth and health. Food is the vehicle, while nutrients are the functional constituents the body extracts and uses. Nutrients are classified into macronutrients, required in large amounts, comprising carbohydrates and lipids as principal energy sources and proteins for structural and functional roles, and micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals needed in smaller quantities to support metabolism, immunity and antioxidant defence. Within an agronomic and nutritional framework, the nutrient value of food begins in the field: soil fertility, crop nutrition and balanced fertilization influence the mineral and protein content of harvested produce, linking soil testing and nutrient management to dietary quality. The supply chain from agricultural production to the plate therefore connects foodgrain output and emerging food sources to the adequacy of diets. On the human side, nutrient intake shapes health outcomes, with patterns of consumption affecting conditions such as metabolic syndrome and informing approaches that range from population dietary education to increasingly individualized and customized nutrition. Understanding food and nutrients thus integrates plant production, food composition and human physiology to address how diet quality can be improved and disease risk reduced across populations.
