Overview

Crop production is the branch of agronomy concerned with cultivating crop plants to achieve high, sustainable yields of food, feed, fiber, and other agricultural products. It integrates the management of soil, water, nutrients, seeds, and cropping systems with practices such as soil testing, fertilization, irrigation, pest and disease control, crop rotation, and the use of improved varieties and biotechnology. The goal is to optimize productivity and quality while conserving resources and minimizing environmental impacts, an increasingly important balance as agriculture faces climate change, land degradation, and the demands of a growing global population. Agronomic research underpins crop production by studying the biological, ecological, and management factors that determine plant growth and yield. Related peer-reviewed work in this collection includes studies on the climate change, land degradation, and food-security nexus, the role of soil testing and soil-health assessment in fertilizer recommendations, the ecological significance of residue retention for sustainable agriculture, strategies to improve fertilizer response and grain production, and the evaluation of crop cultivars and nutrient management under varied conditions. Together this open-access research illustrates the science of growing crops efficiently and sustainably, supporting study of crop production within modern agronomy and food security.
