Overview

Agriculture is the practice and science of cultivating soil, growing crops, and raising livestock to produce food, fiber, fuel, and other goods that sustain human societies. As one of the oldest and most fundamental human activities, it underpins food security, rural livelihoods, and national economies, while increasingly intersecting with environmental management and global development policy. Modern agricultural research spans agronomy, soil science, crop physiology, farm economics, and the social dimensions of farming systems. Central concerns include optimizing crop growth, yield, and quality; improving fertilizer efficiency and foodgrain production; and managing the interactions among climate change, land degradation, and food security. Sustainability has become a defining theme, encompassing residue retention in semi-arid tropics, permaculture practices, and the conservation of land at the urban-rural interface. Precision agriculture, which uses spatial data, sensors, and technologies such as remote-controlled drones for targeted spraying, is studied as a route to higher productivity and resource efficiency, including in rice production. Research in this area also examines the economic and demographic forces shaping farming, such as migration, remittances, and the prospects of agricultural graduates.
