Overview

An agricultural cooperative is a business owned and democratically controlled by farmers, ranchers, or growers who join together to pursue shared economic goals. By pooling resources, members can achieve benefits that would be difficult to obtain individually, such as buying seed, fertilizer, equipment, and other inputs in bulk at lower cost, marketing their produce collectively to obtain better prices, and gaining access to processing, storage, credit, and technical services. In the cooperative model, members are also the owners, each typically holding an equal voice in governance, and any surplus is distributed among members in proportion to their use of the cooperative rather than their investment. Agricultural cooperatives play an important role in rural economies, helping small and medium-sized producers improve their bargaining power, stabilize incomes, share risk, and adopt improved farming practices and technologies. Agronomy Research publishes peer-reviewed work across crop science and agricultural production, the broader field within which cooperative production, marketing, and the adoption of agronomic practices and technologies are studied. This page gathers open-access research relevant to agricultural cooperatives and the organization of crop production and agricultural systems.
