Overview

The social and economic issues of ageing encompass the consequences of population ageing for individuals, families, communities, and health and welfare systems, addressing how older adults experience changes in roles, relationships, resources, and care needs. As the proportion of older people grows, particularly in developed countries, these issues include social isolation, caregiving burden and the organisation of care, financial security and the costs of long-term support, equity of access to services, and the effects of crises such as pandemics on older populations. They intersect with health through the influence of social determinants on functional independence, disease self-management, and wellbeing, and through the way disability, frailty, and chronic conditions shape the demand for care. Research in this area examines models of person-centred care, health literacy and equity, caregiving, and the vulnerability of older adults to abuse, neglect, and displacement. The peer-reviewed research collected under this topic addresses care during the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on older people, social isolation, equity and literacy issues in chronic disease management, person-centred models of care, elder abuse and neglect among vulnerable and displaced populations, and the relationship between social factors and health, reflecting the field's concern with the human, organisational, and economic dimensions of ageing societies and the support of older adults.
