Overview

Public health is the organized science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations rather than individual patients. It works through surveillance, prevention, health promotion, environmental and behavioral intervention, and the management of health systems and services, with the aim of reducing the burden of disease and narrowing inequities in health outcomes. The discipline is structured around interlocking functions: monitoring the distribution and determinants of disease in defined populations, identifying risk factors, designing and evaluating interventions, and translating evidence into policy and community action. Core domains include epidemiology, communicable and non-communicable disease control, maternal and child health, environmental and occupational health, and the strengthening of health information and service-delivery systems. Research in this area spans the control of infectious threats such as vector-borne arboviral disease and pandemic respiratory infection, the prevention of chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, and the assessment of how environmental change, air quality, social isolation, and access to facilities shape health. It also examines data quality, knowledge, attitudes, and practices within communities, and partnerships between health and social services. Effective public health relies on integrating biological, behavioral, and structural knowledge to anticipate threats and allocate resources where population benefit is greatest.
