Overview

Longevity refers to the length of an individual's lifespan and, in ageing research, to the biological determinants that influence how long organisms live and, increasingly, how long they remain in good health. It is shaped by the interplay of genetic factors, cellular and molecular processes of ageing, and modifiable influences including nutrition, physical activity, metabolic health, and environment. Mechanistic study of longevity examines pathways governing cellular senescence, telomere maintenance, sirtuin and telomerase activity, oxidative balance, and metabolic regulation, often using animal and cellular models to test interventions that extend lifespan or delay age-related decline. A central distinction is drawn between lifespan and healthspan, the period free of major disease and disability, with research emphasising strategies that compress morbidity rather than merely prolonging survival, including vitamin and micronutrient status, the gut microbiota, psychological wellbeing, and the prevention of frailty and falls. The peer-reviewed research collected under this topic addresses experimental models of ageing and lifespan extension, including long-lived animal models and learning and memory, the influence of vitamin D on health in older adults, muscle dysfunction and melatonin, positive psychology and ageing, frailty and falls, dietary and microbiota influences on health maintenance, and the management of age-related disease, reflecting the field's dual concern with the biological mechanisms that govern lifespan and the interventions that promote healthy, functional longevity.
