Overview
Health care, in the context of aging research, refers to the organized services, systems, and practices through which older adults receive medical treatment, preventive care, and support for chronic conditions. As populations age, health care for older people increasingly focuses on managing multiple coexisting conditions, maintaining function and independence, and addressing the social and economic factors that shape access to services. Research within this field examines how older adults reach and use care and what barriers stand in their way. Studies of facilitators and barriers to health care access among the elderly draw on the perspectives of managers and service providers to map gaps in the health system, while work on government-sponsored insurance coverage and out-of-pocket spending among older people analyzes the financial dimensions of access. Models of person-centered care describe approaches designed to promote health among older adults, and research on health literacy, chronic-disease self-management, and nutrition across the continuum of care addresses how individuals and systems sustain wellbeing in later life. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to health care and the needs of aging populations.
