Overview

Emerging technologies in ageing research comprise the analytical, molecular, and digital tools increasingly applied to understand the biology of ageing and to improve the health and care of older adults. These include genomic and other omics technologies that characterise the molecular changes accompanying ageing, biomarkers of biological age and disease risk, cell- and tissue-based and regenerative approaches, and digital, sensor, and data-driven methods for assessing function, monitoring chronic disease, and supporting self-management. Their goal is to move beyond chronological age toward mechanistic understanding of why tissues decline, to identify modifiable processes, and to translate findings into prevention, earlier diagnosis, and more effective interventions for age-related conditions such as osteoarthritis, cognitive impairment, and frailty. The field also examines how such technologies intersect with health literacy, equity, and the organisation of care, and how evidence on physical, cognitive, and social interventions can be implemented in ageing populations. The peer-reviewed research associated with this topic addresses osteoarthritis assessment, self-management, and literacy, cognitive stimulation and photobiomodulation, frailty and functional measures, regenerative and stem-cell perspectives, and the impact of social and contextual factors on ageing, reflecting the discipline's effort to harness new scientific and technological methods to characterise the ageing process and to enhance the prevention, diagnosis, and management of conditions affecting older adults.
