Overview
Circadian rhythms are biological processes that recur on an approximately twenty-four-hour cycle in living organisms, driven by internal molecular clocks and synchronised by environmental cues such as light and temperature. They govern a wide range of physiological functions, including metabolism, hormone levels, body temperature and the sleep-wake cycle, helping to align internal biology with the external day. Circadian timing is increasingly studied in the context of ageing and healthcare, because the robustness and amplitude of circadian rhythms tend to decline with age, contributing to disrupted sleep, altered metabolism and increased vulnerability to disease in older adults. Understanding these changes has implications for sleep medicine, the timing of treatment, and the maintenance of health across the lifespan. Research published in this journal reflects these concerns, including studies of circadian oscillators in cancer stem cells, the endocannabinoid system in relation to circadian rhythms and sleep regulation, and the role of melatonin. Related work examines non-pharmacological interventions for disrupted sleep in dementia populations, the effects of physical activity on sleep among adolescents and adults, loneliness and bedtime procrastination, and metabolic and psychiatric conditions associated with circadian disturbance. Together these studies illustrate interest in the biology of circadian rhythms, their disruption with age and disease, and approaches to supporting sleep and healthy ageing.
