Overview

Cardiovascular health describes the state and optimal functioning of the heart and blood vessels, encompassing the maintenance of normal blood pressure, vascular integrity, lipid and glucose regulation, and cardiac performance. It is shaped by modifiable factors, including diet, physical activity, body composition, and avoidance of tobacco, and by non-modifiable factors such as age and genetic predisposition. With advancing age, arterial stiffening, endothelial change, and the accumulation of risk factors raise the likelihood of hypertension, coronary disease, heart failure, and stroke, making prevention and early detection central concerns. Assessment combines clinical measurement, risk-factor profiling, and increasingly the evaluation of functional and metabolic markers. Research in this area examines lifestyle behaviors and hypertension across populations, the contribution of nutrition and dietary intervention to cardio-metabolic risk, and culturally tailored programs that reduce risk factors in specific communities. It also considers the interplay between cardiovascular outcomes and frailty, nutritional status, and concurrent conditions, as well as the value of activity and exercise capacity in predicting risk. Maintaining cardiovascular health requires sustained attention to blood pressure control, healthy diet, regular physical activity, and the management of comorbidities such as diabetes. Because cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of disability and death, strategies that integrate behavioral, nutritional, and clinical approaches across the life course are essential to preserving function and longevity.
