Overview
Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints producing pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced range of motion, and is an umbrella term encompassing more than a hundred distinct conditions rather than a single disease. Its principal forms differ in mechanism and course. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder characterised by progressive breakdown of articular cartilage, subchondral bone change and osteophyte formation, typically affecting weight-bearing joints such as the knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and related inflammatory or autoimmune arthritides arise from immune-mediated synovial inflammation that can erode cartilage and bone, sometimes linked to genetic susceptibility variants. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis comprises chronic inflammatory joint diseases of childhood. Septic arthritis results from microbial infection of a joint, occasionally following procedures such as intra-articular injection, and constitutes a clinical emergency, while crystal arthritides arise from deposition of urate or other crystals. The pathophysiology involves synovial inflammation, cytokine release, cellular infiltration and structural joint damage. The prevalence and burden of arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, rise markedly with age, where joint disease contributes to chronic pain, impaired mobility, increased risk of falls and reduced quality of life, and is frequently accompanied by associated conditions including depression.
