Overview

The ageing of Europe refers to the demographic trend in which the proportion of older people in European populations is rising, driven by increased life expectancy and declining fertility rates. This shift has wide-ranging implications for healthcare, social care, pensions, the workforce, and the economy, as a larger share of the population reaches older age and the balance between working-age and retired people changes. It has made the health, care, and social inclusion of older Europeans a central policy and research concern. Research relevant to ageing in the European context appears in Aging Research And Healthcare. Studies consider whether ageing should be understood as a demographic "time-bomb" or as a social construct, outlining the potential horizons and opportunities that an ageing population presents, and examine ageing and the "pandemic care triangle" from the perspective of Barcelona, reflecting on how older people and care systems were affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together these contributions address both the framing of population ageing and the practical realities of caring for older adults in Europe. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the ageing of Europe and the care of older populations.
