Overview

Nanotechnology in materials engineering is the application of structures and processes at the nanometre scale, billionths of a metre, to design and produce materials with enhanced or novel properties. At these dimensions, surface effects and quantum phenomena become significant, allowing engineers to improve strength, hardness, electrical and thermal conductivity, optical behaviour and chemical reactivity. By controlling particles, coatings, composites and structures at the nanoscale, materials engineers create lighter, stronger and more functional materials for applications across electronics, energy, medicine and manufacturing. As a journal devoted to Advances in Nanotechnology, this title publishes research spanning nanomaterials, nanocomposites, nanoscale processing and the characterisation of structure and performance at small scales. Common areas include the fabrication of nanostructured surfaces and coatings, the reinforcement of composites with nanoscale fillers, and the study of how nanoscale features influence mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical behaviour. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to nanotechnology in materials engineering, including the synthesis, properties and applications of engineered nanomaterials and the methods used to tailor material behaviour through nanoscale design.
