Overview

Toxicology is the scientific study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical, and biological agents on living organisms, together with the mechanisms, dose-response relationships, and risk assessment that characterise those effects. A foundational principle is that the dose modulates physiology, so that the same substance may be benign, therapeutic, or harmful depending on exposure level, duration, and route. In pharmaceutical and environmental science, toxicology underpins the evaluation of drugs and other agents before and after they reach use, integrating preclinical hazard testing with pharmacovigilance data such as hospital episodes from drug overdose. Major branches reflected in this literature include nutritional toxicology, where biogenic amines and dietary exposures are examined; environmental and aquatic toxicology, including the effects of heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium on aquatic organisms; metabolomic approaches to assessing environmental exposure; and food-safety analysis using techniques such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Emerging challenges, including the toxicological dimensions of pandemic agents, broaden the field's scope. Sub-areas span mechanistic, regulatory, clinical, forensic, and computational systems toxicology, alongside immunological strategies for developing safer therapeutic agents. By linking exposure to biological response across scales, toxicology provides the evidence base for protecting human and ecological health and for the safe development of therapeutics.
