Overview
Sprague-Dawley rats are an outbred albino laboratory rat strain widely used in biomedical and pharmaceutical research due to their docile temperament, ease of breeding, and physiological similarity to humans in many metabolic and disease processes. Research published in Advanced Pharmaceutical Science And Technology employing this strain has focused primarily on evaluating proprietary test formulations and biofield energy treatments across multiple disease models. Studies have examined cardiovascular disorders induced by L-NAME and high-fat diets, assessing cardiac performance, antioxidant activity, and renal and cardioprotective effects. Additional investigations have utilized Sprague-Dawley rats to model systemic inflammatory response syndrome through cecal slurry, lipopolysaccharide, and E. coli challenges, measuring inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant responses in various tissues including brain. Other research has explored vitamin D3 deficiency models, examining metabolite levels, neurotransmitter activity, and proinflammatory cytokine expression, as well as immunomodulatory effects in D-galactose-induced aging and therapeutic outcomes in TNBS-induced ulcerative colitis. The strain has also been employed in unpredictable chronic stress models to evaluate sleep biomarkers. This body of work demonstrates the utility of Sprague-Dawley rats as translational models for testing novel formulations intended to address oxidative stress, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and age-related conditions.
