Overview
Pulmonary refers to the lungs and the respiratory system, and as a field of study encompasses the structure, function, and diseases of the airways, lung parenchyma, and pulmonary vasculature. The lungs perform gas exchange, transferring oxygen to and removing carbon dioxide from the blood, and disturbances of ventilation, perfusion, or their matching underlie a wide range of respiratory disorders. In pharmaceutical and clinical science, pulmonary topics include respiratory pharmacology, inhalation therapy, and the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic lung disease. Research in this area addresses chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including its phenotypes, comorbidities, severity classification, and associated markers such as microalbuminuria and hypoxaemia, as well as pulmonary embolism and the role of risk-stratification biomarkers, pulmonary hypertension, and acute lung injury and respiratory distress. Further strands examine pulmonary manifestations and microthrombi in viral infection such as COVID-19, drug-induced pulmonary embolism, congenital and fetal pulmonary conditions, and surgical management of pulmonary lesions. These studies draw on physiology, imaging, biomarkers, and clinical outcomes. The topic matters because respiratory disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and a major target for therapeutic and diagnostic innovation. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on respiratory physiology, pulmonary disease, and the diagnosis and treatment of lung disorders.
