Overview
Pharmacology is the biomedical science concerned with how drugs and other bioactive substances interact with living systems. It encompasses pharmacodynamics, the study of a drug's biochemical and physiological effects and its mechanism of action at receptors, enzymes, and signalling pathways, and pharmacokinetics, the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion that determine drug exposure over time. The discipline integrates chemistry, physiology, and molecular biology and progresses through in silico, in vitro, and in vivo investigation to characterise efficacy, potency, dose-response relationships, and safety. Contemporary research in this area applies network pharmacology to predict the multiple molecular targets of candidate compounds, including phytochemicals and essential-oil constituents, and uses structure-activity relationship analysis and computer-aided design to guide lead optimisation, as in studies of xanthones as kinase inhibitors. Further strands include comparative evaluation of lipid-lowering and antihypertensive agents, the application of immunoglobulins and immune-response biology to therapeutic development, psychopharmacology of centrally acting compounds, preclinical cardiotoxicity and disease-model testing, and dose-response characterisation of natural-product fractions. Pharmacology matters because it provides the mechanistic and quantitative foundation for rational drug discovery, development, and clinical use. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning molecular, preclinical, and applied pharmacology.
