Overview
Pharmacists are healthcare professionals trained in the science and practice of medicines, responsible for the safe and effective use of drugs across clinical, community, hospital, and industrial settings. Their role extends well beyond dispensing prescriptions to include reviewing therapy for appropriateness and safety, counseling patients, monitoring for drug interactions and adverse effects, and contributing to disease prevention and health promotion. As experts in pharmacology and pharmaceutical care, pharmacists collaborate with other clinicians to optimize treatment, support medication adherence, and improve outcomes, and they play important parts in antimicrobial stewardship, public-health initiatives, and the delivery of services in resource-limited and underserved areas. The profession has evolved with advances in pharmaceutical science and technology and with new models of practice, including tele-pharmacy and digital and e-health tools that expanded access to pharmaceutical services, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research concerning pharmacists examines their knowledge and skills, the quality and auditability of pharmaceutical services, job satisfaction and occupational stress and their effects on care, and the integration of information technology into practice. Effective pharmacy services depend on adequate training, supportive working conditions, and well-designed systems. As the professionals who bridge the development, distribution, and rational use of medicines, pharmacists are central to medication safety, patient care, and the broader functioning of health systems.
