Pharmaceutical science and health care together encompass the discovery, formulation, evaluation, and clinical delivery of medicines to improve human health. Pharmaceutical science is a multidisciplinary field drawing on chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and analytical methods to design drug substances, characterise their physicochemical and thermal properties, develop dosage forms, and assess their quality, stability, and behaviour in the body. Analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and related spectrometric methods are central to identifying compounds, confirming purity, and studying isotopic and structural characteristics, while formulation work, including the design of controlled- or delayed-release coatings, governs how and where a drug is released. The health-care dimension connects these laboratory foundations to practice, addressing how medicines are prescribed, dispensed, and used safely. This includes pharmacovigilance and the monitoring of adverse events such as overdose, the appropriateness of self-medication and drug-storage practices in communities, and the working conditions and job-related stress of community pharmacists who deliver pharmaceutical care services. Bridging basic and translational research, the field links molecular characterisation of drug candidates to patient-centred outcomes.
