Overview

Pharmaceutical research and development is the scientific and technical process through which new medicines are discovered, designed, tested, and prepared for use. It spans the identification of biological targets and candidate compounds, the optimization of those compounds for safety and efficacy, formulation and manufacturing science, and the preclinical and clinical evaluation needed to establish that a drug is both effective and acceptably safe. The field is inherently multidisciplinary, drawing on chemistry, pharmacology, biology, computational modeling, and engineering, and it increasingly relies on advanced technologies to accelerate discovery and improve drug delivery. Research collected on this page reflects this technological dimension within Advanced Pharmaceutical Science And Technology, including a review of supercritical fluid technology, a tool used in processing, extraction, and particle engineering of pharmaceutical materials, and a review of computer-aided drug design, which applies computational methods to predict how molecules interact with biological targets and to guide the search for new therapeutics. Together these illustrate how modern pharmaceutical development combines experimental and in silico approaches to bring innovations from concept toward application. As a topic within pharmaceutical science and technology, research and development underpins the creation of new and improved treatments. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pharmaceutical research, drug design, and pharmaceutical technology.
