Overview

Pharmaceutical health care and sciences is the interdisciplinary field that joins the basic and applied sciences of medicines with their delivery and use within health care. It studies drugs, their physicochemical properties, and their interactions with biological systems, while also addressing how pharmaceutical services are organized and how patients access and use medications safely. The scientific dimension draws on chemistry, biology, and pharmacology and employs analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to characterize and quantify drug substances and to examine their physicochemical and thermal behavior. The health-care dimension encompasses pharmacy practice, including pharmaceutical care services and the factors affecting the pharmacists who provide them, patterns of self-medication and medicine storage in communities, and pharmacovigilance, which monitors adverse effects and medication-related harm such as overdose. This breadth reflects the field's dual commitment to producing reliable therapeutic agents and to ensuring their rational, equitable, and safe use in populations. Methodologically it integrates laboratory analysis, pharmacology, and public-health and health-services research. Sub-areas include analytical pharmaceutical chemistry, drug characterization, pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care, medication safety and pharmacovigilance, and community medication use. By spanning the laboratory and the clinic, pharmaceutical health care and sciences supports both the quality of medicines and the systems and behaviors that determine their real-world effectiveness and safety.
