Overview

Pharmaceutical analysis is the application of analytical chemistry to the identification, quantification, and characterisation of drugs, their formulations, impurities, and degradation products. It provides the measurements that underpin drug quality, safety, and efficacy, supporting development, manufacturing, stability assessment, and regulatory compliance. The discipline employs separation and detection techniques including high-performance liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, spectrofluorimetry, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and mass spectrometry, often hyphenated as LC-MS or GC-MS, to resolve and measure analytes in complex matrices. Research in this area includes the development of spectrofluorimetric and chromatographic methods for quantifying active ingredients such as imipramine and atorvastatin in dosage forms, the detection of adulterants in dietary supplements marketed for sexual enhancement, the use of LC-MS and GC-MS for isotopic-ratio and compound characterisation, and the evaluation of coating and release-modifying excipients on tablets. Method validation, selectivity, and sensitivity are central concerns across these studies. Pharmaceutical analysis matters because reliable analytical data are indispensable for ensuring that medicines contain the correct identity, strength, and purity and for detecting contamination or substandard products. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on analytical method development, validation, and the physicochemical characterisation of pharmaceutical compounds and formulations.
