Overview
Medicinal plants are plants that contain naturally occurring compounds used to prevent, relieve, or treat disease, and they have served as a source of remedies in traditional medicine across cultures for thousands of years. Their therapeutic effects come from bioactive constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, saponins, and other secondary metabolites, which can possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and other pharmacological activities. Medicinal plants remain important to modern pharmaceutical science as a reservoir of lead compounds for drug discovery, and contemporary research applies phytochemical analysis, bioassays, and toxicity evaluation to identify active constituents, validate traditional uses, and assess safety and efficacy. Standardizing extracts and understanding mechanisms of action are key to translating plant-based knowledge into reliable therapeutics. Advanced Pharmaceutical Science And Technology and related OpenAccessPub titles publish peer-reviewed work across these themes, including studies on the antimycotic activity of medicinal-plant leaf extracts against dermatophytes, an overview of medicinal plants and their traditional uses, the antioxidant activity of medicinal plants with adaptogenic properties, and the acute and subacute toxicity evaluation of a medicinal plant extract. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medicinal plants, their phytochemistry, pharmacological activity, and safety.
