Drugs are chemical substances that produce a biological effect when administered to a living organism and are used to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure disease and to modify physiological function. In pharmaceutical science they are studied across their entire life cycle, from discovery and the identification of therapeutic targets and active compounds, through the design and synthesis of candidate molecules, to preclinical evaluation, clinical testing, formulation, manufacture, and quality control. Their safe and effective use depends on rigorous clinical evaluation before marketing, on analytical methods for identification and quantification, and on surveillance of adverse effects, misuse, adulteration, and patterns of self-medication.
