Overview
Drugs are chemical substances that produce a biological effect when administered to a living organism and are used to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure disease and to modify physiological function. In pharmaceutical science they are studied across their entire life cycle, from discovery and the identification of therapeutic targets and active compounds, through the design and synthesis of candidate molecules, to preclinical evaluation, clinical testing, formulation, manufacture, and quality control. Drugs are characterized by their pharmacodynamics, or mechanisms of action, and their pharmacokinetics, or absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, and they span many therapeutic classes including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and metabolic agents. Their safe and effective use depends on rigorous clinical evaluation before marketing, on analytical methods for identification and quantification, and on surveillance of adverse effects, misuse, adulteration, and patterns of self-medication. Research relevant to this topic includes the assessment of self-medication practice and drug storage, the clinical testing required before new drugs and devices reach the market, the investigation of antimicrobial activity in plant extracts, the identification and quantification of adulterants in marketed products, novel carriers for targeted drug delivery, analytical techniques for determining drugs in biological matrices, pharmacovigilance of overdose data, and the status of specific drug classes such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents in disease prevention and treatment.
