Overview

Drug delivery is the science and technology of formulating and administering pharmaceutical agents so as to achieve safe, effective, and controlled therapeutic action at the intended site in the body. It addresses the design of carriers and systems that govern where, when, and at what rate a drug is released, with goals that include sustaining plasma concentrations, targeting specific tissues, protecting labile compounds, improving solubility and bioavailability, and limiting off-target toxicity. Approaches span polymeric and gum-based matrices for site-specific or sustained release, lipid assemblies such as liposomes, nanoparticle and nanomedicine platforms, stimulus-responsive systems that respond to cues such as pH, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. Research in this area includes the evaluation of natural gums as carriers for colon-targeted delivery, transdermal penetration enhancers, lipid-based delivery tools, pH-sensitive nanomedicines for cancer therapy, gene-silencing delivery using functionalised nanorods, and scaffold and nanoparticle systems for regenerative and cytotoxic applications. Characterisation of carrier degradation, release behaviour, and cellular interaction is central to this work. Drug delivery matters because the delivery system, as much as the active molecule, determines therapeutic outcome, patient adherence, and safety. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on delivery systems, formulation strategies, and the materials science underpinning controlled and targeted drug release.
