Overview

Biological and pharmaceutical research is the integrated study of how drugs are designed, characterized, manufactured, and used, drawing on chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and analytical science to advance safe and effective therapeutics. A core strand is drug discovery and design, increasingly supported by computer-aided methods that model molecular structures and predict ligand-target interactions to prioritize candidate compounds. Analytical pharmaceutical chemistry underpins quality and quantitation, using techniques such as spectrofluorimetry for measuring active ingredients in dosage forms and coupled mass spectrometry, including LC-MS and GC-MS, for compositional and isotopic characterization. Formulation and processing science addresses how active substances are stabilized and delivered; supercritical fluid technology, for example, offers solvent-efficient routes for extraction, particle engineering, and processing of pharmaceutical materials. The field further encompasses pharmaceutical practice and services research, examining how community pharmacists deliver pharmaceutical care and how workplace conditions influence that delivery. Translational research connects laboratory findings to clinical application, while materials and physicochemical studies probe the thermal and structural properties relevant to drug substances and excipients. Across these sub-areas, biological and pharmaceutical research combines mechanistic understanding, rigorous measurement, and process innovation to improve drug development, manufacturing quality, and rational therapeutic use.
