Overview

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. The hyperactive-impulsive features may include restlessness, difficulty remaining seated or waiting, excessive movement or talking, and acting without forethought, while inattentive features involve difficulty sustaining focus, organising tasks, and following through. Symptoms typically emerge in childhood and can persist into adolescence and adulthood, affecting academic, occupational, and social life. Diagnosis is clinical, based on behavioural criteria and history rather than a single test, and presentations vary considerably between individuals. ADHD is understood to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors affecting brain development and function, and it frequently co-occurs with other conditions such as learning difficulties, anxiety, and mood disorders. Management is individualised and commonly combines behavioural and psychosocial strategies with pharmacological treatment, alongside educational and family support. The journal publishes research and commentary relevant to ADHD and child and adolescent care, including work on assistive technologies and support for students with ADHD, the building of resilience and protective factors, mindfulness-based approaches, and questions of diagnosis across genders. Key aspects of study include accurate diagnosis, the role of attention and impulse regulation, supportive interventions in academic and interpersonal domains, and the recognition that effective care must be tailored to the individual.
